Acne Awareness Month

Did you know June is Acne Awareness Month? Yes, it has been set aside in order to bring light to this very common skin concern all around the world. Acne can be a very sensitive and embarrassing topic for those affected by it. So, in view of this, I thought to share a few details about it in today’s post.

What Is Acne?

Acne is a skin condition which occurs as a result of clogged pores. This can eventually lead to whiteheads, blackheads and pimples. Acne can appear on the face, forehead, chest, upper back or shoulders. It is relatively common in teenagers and young adults but people of all ages can be affected by it.

Causes Of Acne

There are four (4) main factors. These include:

  • Bacteria.
  • Inflammation.
  • Excess oil (sebum) production.
  • Hair follicles clogged by oil and dead skin cells.

Other things like stress, hormonal changes, certain medications and diet can also trigger or worsen acne.

How To Treat Acne

This really depends on how severe it is. Over-the-counter treatments (also called topical treatments) like gels or creams containing benzoyl peroxide will work just fine if you have a few blackheads, whiteheads and spots. However, in more severe cases, I would advise you see a dermatologist for proper diagnosis and treatment.

I’ve had my own share of acne issues and in celebration of this acne awareness month, here’s a post about my journey + a video to show the products that helped me.

I hope you found this post helpful. Remember – Be gentle with yourself on this journey.

    • Hi Fashionandstylez, thank you so much!

About your question, acne is relatively common in teenagers and young adults due to hormone changes during puberty.

      I hope that helps. Xx
